Ricci was a prolific recording virtuoso who made many dashing recordings for Decca from the 1950s to the 1970s. Not all listeners responded to his close vibrato, but he had a considerable international reputation. These two CDs contain some of his most successful discs, and his admirers will be glad to have them available again, though they must be approached with some caution. Though there have been finer accounts of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, Ricci’s, dating from the late 1950s, still remains a formidable one. He has the clean, clear-cut and effortless technique that is a prime necessity for this concerto. The reading is straightforward, with no lack of intensity (the finale has real electricity). A considerable contribution to the success of the performance is made by Fjeldstad with the LSO (the same conductor who made Curzon’s classic recording of the Grieg Piano Concerto around the same time). Although Ricci is well forward, he is sufficiently detached from the orchestra to give an impression of depth. The same conductor accompanies the two delightful Tchaikovsky movements that might almost be part of an early Tchaikovsky violin concerto. The Sérénade was written in 1875, three years before the well-known concerto. It is slighter than the slow movement of the actual concerto but has a similar wistful sweetness, entirely characteristic of the composer, and is most appealing melodically. The Scherzo, arranged from a group of pieces written for violin and piano, is short, genial, pithy and very attractive. Ricci plays both pieces admirably and the accompaniment and recording are again excellent. As for the performance of the main Tchaikovsky Concerto, Ricci is especially impressive in the finale, where the soloist’s brilliance comes into its own – inspiring an electricity in Sargent’s conducting which was often lacking in his studio recordings. If the slow movement isn’t quite as impressive as either his earlier, mono recording or his later, Phase 4 version with Fournet (it lacks a warm lyricism, not helped by his close vibrato), it remains a vital reading, and the Decca sound is excellent. The second disc comprises colourful violin show-pieces of Sarasate and Saint-Saëns which show off Ricci’s extrovert style very well. His brilliance is dazzling, making the most of the bright colours and seductive melodies. The Saint-Saëns items are justly admired, but part of the success of these performances is also thanks to the lively, precise accompaniments of Piero Gamba and the LSO – all brightly captured in stereo by Decca in the late 1950s. The Khachaturian Violin Concerto (one of the composer’s very best works) completes this disc. Fistoulari matches Ricci’s brilliance in terms of extrovert, bright playing and, with vivid Decca stereo sound (1956), one can see why this recording was originally so popular. For Ricci’s admirers this two-CD set makes a suitable companion to Decca’s five-CD ‘Originals Masters’ box (475 108-2), which includes some of Ricci’s most impressive chamber-music recordings, including the delightful Weber Violin Sonatas, as well as his classic Paganini Caprices (for which he was well suited) and his mono recording of Paginini’s First and Second Violin Concertos (with excellent accompaniments from Anthony Collins) and a characterful performance of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole (with Ansermet). A second volume of concertos has also been released on Australian Decca Eloquence (480 2080), which includes a rare mono performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto (with the LPO and Boult), a brilliant Mendelssohn (with the Netherlands RPO and Fournet), the Bruch No. 1 (with the LSO and Gamba – a full-blooded reading) and the much rarer Concerto of Dvořák (with the LSO and Sargent).

Perhaps these are not the greatest recordings of the greatest music, but it is entertaining rarities like these that make record collecting so much fun. These three works are associated with Ferdinand Ries’s successful period of living in England, from 1813 until the early 1820s. Beethoven’s influence in this 35-minute Piano Concerto is obvious and it is a thoroughly entertaining work, subtitled ‘Farewell to England’. Written in 1823, it is very much in the same vein as Hummel’s concertos of the period: very tuneful, with melodic classicism tempered with more dramatic overtones. The finale is a toe-tapping delight. It would be wonderful to hear such music in the concert hall, but I suspect that all we ever shall get is this recording – which luckily is first rate. The Grand Variations on ‘Rule Britannia’ is an absolute hoot, with its bold introduction leading up to its famous theme, which is treated to some brilliant variations. The Introduction et Variations Brillantes is a similarly brilliant treatment of ‘Soldier, soldier, will you marry me?’ Sparkling performances to match the music, and the recording is first rate.

This two-CD Rimsky-Korsakov set surely shows Ansermet at his very finest. The opening of the Christmas Eve Suite has a chilled, icy, magical atmosphere, and this colourful tone-poem builds up to a magnificent polonaise – an adrenalin-inducing moment – where Ansermet’s rhythmic bite is at its best. The Snow Maiden Suite is similarly colourful, with Ansermet bringing out all the brilliance of the woodwind and percussion in particular. Neither the Russian Easter Festival Overture nor Capriccio espagnol is as inspired as this, though the rhythmic point in Capriccio espagnol (the only mono recording on this CD) is unfailingly enjoyable. The opening of Dubinushka is delightfully and jauntily pointed, with the bass drum (as always from this source) beautifully captured, adding to the piquant effect. Sadko has marvellous atmosphere and intensity – as well as drama – and there is plenty of felicitous music, as well as playing, in the score. May Night, with its vibrant strings, comes off well, as does all the brilliance in the Tale of Tsar Saltan Suite. Even if Ansermet’s bee in the Flight of the Bumblebee is a rather leisurely creature, it is invested with plenty of buzz from all departments of the orchestra. The longest work in this collection is the still rare Antar, which Ansermet helped to pioneer on LP – he recorded its first stereo release in astonishingly early stereo, dating from June 1954, yet sounding amazingly full, if not as expansive as the later recordings on this CD.

Kondrashin’s 1958 performance is among the finest ever recorded, ranking alongside Maazel’s famous Berlin Philharmonic account, but with the advantage of slightly more sumptuous string-textures. Like the coupled Tchaikovsky Capriccio, it has great flair and excitement, with glittering colour and detail in the variations and the Scena e canto gitano. The orchestral zest is exhilarating, yet there is warmth too, and the resonant recording still sounds very good indeed.

孔德拉申1958年的演绎堪称史上最佳版本之一,与马泽尔指挥柏林爱乐的经典演绎比肩,且弦乐音色更为丰沛。如同搭配的柴可夫斯基《随想曲》,此版以炫目的色彩与细节呈现变奏乐章和《吉普赛之歌》,既迸发着令人振奋的 orchestral 活力,又不失温情。录音虽年代久远,其辉煌的共鸣效果仍极具感染力。

Now here is something rather special. Ormandy recorded it at the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, in 1977–8. Television concerts by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic are available in abundance, from Beethoven to Strauss, but the other great partnerships of the period also producing a unique sonority, flair and virtuosity are scantily represented. Here we have a performance of Scheherazade which is perfect in every way, with a superb violin soloist in Norman Carol. The visual side of things is expertly managed, as is the sound.

Reiner’s magnificent (1956) Scheherazade stands out among the many superb RCA recordings made in Chicago in the 1950s. In the new SACD transfer the sensation of sitting in the concert hall is uncannily real, and the recording itself has extraordinary lustre. Reiner’s first movement opens richly and dramatically and has a strong forward impulse. Sidney Harth, the orchestral leader, naturally balanced, plays most seductively. Reiner’s affectionate individual touches in the gloriously played slow movement have much in common with Beecham’s version, and they sound similarly spontaneous. The finale, brilliant and exciting, was recorded in a single take and has a climax of resounding power and amplitude, and the acoustics throughout provide the orchestra with plenty of body and arresting brass sonorities. The Stravinsky coupling also shows the conductor and orchestra at their finest, and this is a CD that should be in everyone’s collection.

These splendid secular choral cantatas are a real find, and show an endearing new facet to Rimsky’s genius. Try the opening Song of Alexis, Man of God, superbly sung by a fine Russian chorus, and you will surely be hooked immediately. The composer re-uses music written to accompany pilgrims in The Maid of Pskov, to evoke the legend of Saint Alexis, who renounced marriage with a princess in order to lead a hermit’s life. Its noble melody is based on a Russian folksong. The Song of Oleg the Wise, set to a poem by Pushkin, for tenor (who tells the story) and bass (Oleg) is melodramatically operatic, and Inz Gomera, based on Homer, even more so with its powerful orchestral Prelude depicting Poseidon’s tempest, before the luminously seductive writing for the female voices.

Switsezianka (using a poem by Lev May) is the familiar folk tale of the watery nymph who captivates her young swain and insists on his fidelity, with a dire penalty if he forgets her. She then returns in an even more beautiful form to test his faithfulness and he immediately forgets his vows, succumbs to temptation, and is swallowed up by the frothing waters of the lake. Rimsky’s highly atmospheric scena, using soprano and tenor soloists, climaxes as a splendid quartet of performances, with fine Russian singers throughout. The recording is first class and so is the documentation, with full translations included, which are easy to follow even without the original Russian.

Ned Rorem is already a celebrated composer of the newer generation in America; he writes tonally and without the need to shock his listeners into submission. On this well-planned Naxos disc we are transported into his refined, often elegiac sound-world by the opening Pilgrims for string orchestra, which evokes a quiet feeling of ‘remembrance’.

Each of the two Concertos is programmatic, the work for flute offering a series of vignettes with often virtuosic embroidery. It is superbly played by Jeffrey Khaner. The arresting opening drum-command introduces the haunting five-note motif on which the six movements all draw. So the work is almost a set of variations, ending with a catchy False Waltz and on to the refined mood of the closing Résumé and Prayer. The result is highly imaginative and full of variety, if perhaps a little over-extended. The Violin Concerto opens dramatically and ardently and is a true interplay between soloist and accompaniment, its second movement an unlikely Toccata-Chaconne built over a jagged timpani rhythm. But the heart of the work is lyrically heart-warming in its gentle beauty, first a simple Romance without Words, followed by the serene Midnight, ‘a microsonic variation’. Philippe Quint is a deeply responsive soloist, playing with silvery timbre: the composer could not have asked for better, and throughout Serebrier directs the accompanying RLPO most sympathetically. First-class recording.

小提琴协奏曲则以炽烈的戏剧性开篇,独奏与乐队形成真正的对话。第二乐章出人意料地以棱角分明的定音鼓节奏构建《托卡塔-恰空》,而作品的核心却流淌着温柔的诗意:先是简约的《无词浪漫曲》,继而是静谧的《子夜》("微观音响变奏")。小提琴家菲利普·昆特的演绎极具深度,银铃般的音色完美契合作曲家意图,塞雷布里埃指挥皇家利物浦爱乐乐团的协奏亦充满默契。录音品质一流。

We have a very soft spot for the sparkle, elegance and wit of these ASMF performances of the Rossini String Sonatas, amazingly accomplished products for a 12-year-old. Marriner offers them on full orchestral strings but with such finesse and precision of ensemble that the result is all gain. The 1966 recording still sounds remarkably full and natural, and the current CD transfer adds to the feeling of presence. The new Double Decca format has other music added. Apart from the Donizetti Quartet, which has an appropriately Rossinian flavour, the two minor concertante works are well worth having, with both Barry Tuckwell (in what is in essence a three-movement horn concertino) and Roger Lord in excellent form.

Marriner’s reissued Trio spans all Rossini’s overtures, but one must remember that the early Neapolitan operas, with the exception of Ricciardo e Zoraide and Ermione, make do with a simple Prelude, leading into the opening chorus. Ricciardo e Zoraide, however, is an extended piece (12 minutes 25 seconds), with the choral entry indicating that the introduction is at an end. Maometto II is on a comparable scale, while the more succinct Armida is an example of Rossini’s picturesque evocation, almost like a miniature tone-poem. Twenty-four overtures plus two sinfonias make a delightful package in such sparkling performances, which eruditely use original orchestrations. The well-known popular overtures stand competition with the best. Indeed, William Tell has almost Toscaninian thrust in the final gallop, but it is the frothy, infectious music-making which one enjoys most. Full, bright, atmospheric recordings, spaciously reverberant with no artificial brilliance.

For a single-disc recommendation of Rossini’s most popular overtures, Reiner’s Chicago version from 1958 (RCA 82876 65844-2) is hard to beat, and they emerge on CD as sparkling and vivacious as ever. Giulini’s Philharmonia recordings on EMI, from the early 1960s, are equally recommendable and very inexpensive (CfP 2 28281-2). For those who insist on digital recording, Chailly’s two-CD bargain set on Decca (443 850-2 (2)) is strongly recommended, stylish performances in demonstration sound, with London’s finest musicians (National Philharmonic Orchestra).

若推荐单碟版罗西尼热门序曲集,莱纳1958年指挥芝加哥交响乐团的版本(RCA 82876 65844-2)仍是难以超越的经典,CD化后依旧光彩焕发;朱里尼1960年代初与爱乐乐团的EMI录音(CfP 2 28281-2)同样值得推荐且价格亲民。追求数码录音的乐迷可选择夏伊利Decca双碟超值套装(443 850-2),伦敦国家爱乐乐团纯熟的演绎配合示范级音效,堪称性价比之选。
