The Band - A Musical History

The Band (literally: "ensemble") is a Canadian-American folk rock band that, despite its limited popularity with the general public, was highly respected by music journalists and fellow musicians. According to a large-scale survey of musicians and critics, Rolling Stone magazine included them among the fifty greatest artists of the era. rock and roll.
In 1959-63, the band members accompanied rockabilly artist Ronnie Hawkins under the name The Hawks. Subsequently, they released several records under the titles Levon and the Hawks and The Canadian Squires. In 1965, at the invitation of Bob Dylan, he was accompanied in the first world tour, which became one of the legendary events in the history of rock music. After Dylan retired from concert activity, a music session was recorded with him, which for a long time circulated as a bootleg (the first in history), and in 1975 was finally released with an album called "The Basement Tapes".
In 1968, the band members recorded their first independent album, Music from Big Pink. Musically, this disc was a sequel to The Basement Tapes; the cover for it was drawn by Dylan himself. He was honored with rave reviews from music critics and had a significant influence on other musicians, marking the beginning of a new direction in music - country rock. In particular, after listening to this disc, guitarist Eric Clapton left the supergroup Cream; he later admitted that he dreamed of becoming a member of The Band at the time.
One reviewer called the band's debut album "a collection of stories about American philistines — as powerfully and elegantly captured on this musical canvas as the characters in Mark Twain's books were derived." The tracks written by Robertson and Manwell were performed by various members of the band - mainly Manwell, Denko and southerner Helm. Especially successful was the song "The Weight", in the text of which biblical motifs were intricately refracted.
In 1969, The Band released their second album, which was called "The Band". Rolling Stone magazine, many of whose employees were fans of the band, wrote at the time that The Band is the only rock band that sounds as if there was no "British invasion" or psychedelia in America, and at the same time remains modern. In this album, Robbie Robertson, who wrote the bulk of the songs, addressed the themes of American history. A typical example is the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", based on an episode of the Civil War between the North and the South.
In the seventies, The Band continued their concert activities, performing along with Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and other musicians. They released a few more CDs, but critics were less sympathetic to them than to the band's earlier works. Contradictions accumulated within the team, mainly related to Robertson's desire to dictate his musical preferences to other participants.
Robertson's attempts to become the unquestioned leader of The Band led to nothing, and after a grand tour with Bob Dylan, the band members announced its breakup in 1976. Their last concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released as a documentary called The Last Waltz. In addition to Dylan, those muses performed at this historic concert.The Band considered their authorities (Muddy Waters, Dylan, Neil Young) or with whom they have worked in the past (Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Clapton).
Seven years later, The Band was reborn again, this time without Robertson. In this line-up, they held many concerts and recorded several new discs, including a joint work with Boris Grebenshchikov, "Lilit".
