Description: Production of the Salzburg Festival 2008. The Viennese version of the opera is performed, in which the usual final ensemble is absent. Director Klaus Gut approached the production with cinematic meticulousness, creating a whole universe on stage. The atmosphere of the production is reminiscent of the films of David Lynch, the action from beginning to end takes place in a dark gloomy forest, recreated with rare for operas thoroughness. Equally detailed are the characters and mise-en-scenes.
The mortally wounded Don Giovanni, who is inevitably approaching his end accompanied by the homeless stick leporello, is not the kind of duo that will cause everyone the joy of recognition, and syringes and beer cans do not contribute to the promotion of high art, but there is definitely some magic in this production.
Of the vocalists, the most praise was given to the performer of the title role Christopher Maltman and Dorothea Röshman in the role of Donna Elvira. The popular bass baritone Erwin Schrott received the largest share of audience applause, although to my ears his vocals were sacrificed to some extent to acting. In any case, this production is one of those that is better to watch and make up your mind.
