Description
: Le nozze di Figaro is one of the most successful comic operas ever. Director David Bösch is a born storyteller. He likes to focus on the classics, and is known for his poetic approach. In this new production of Le nozze di Figaro, the hectic, bubbly story of Figaro’s eventful wedding party is visually interpreted in a revolving stage set. Le nozze di Figaro is based on Beaumarchais’ play La folle journée ou Le mariage de Figaro, which shook up the feudal French society to its core. For Mozart’s opera, librettist Da Ponte removed the sharper edges in order to mollify the censors, and Le nozze di Figaro was eventually received with great enthusiasm. Passages had to be repeated so often by request that Emperor Joseph II himself enforced a clamp down on the number of encores! Alex Esposito will sing the title role opposite Stéphane Degout as Count Almaviva. They will be singing alongside Eleonora Buratto as the Countess, and Christiane Karg (DNO debut), as Susanna, Figaro’s bride.

The costumes, decorated in the style of the late 1790s, chronologically emphasize the historical allusion to absolutist Spain of the Bourbon era (although the cut of Leonora's uniforms and schmies does not correspond to the later fashion standard of the Franco-Spanish War era, which MacVicar turned into the dramatic background of this version of the Troubadour). Description: One of the best productions to date in the unique performance of such stars of the opera stage as Jose Kura and Dmitry Hvorostovsky. Opera in four acts on a libretto (in Italian) by Salvatore Cammarano, based on the drama of the same name by Antonio García Gutiérrez, which, in turn, describes some real events. "Il Trovatore" is a drama of sharp contrasts, violent clashes, strong, romantically elevated feelings. Recreating the tragic fate of the heroes of the opera, embodying their experiences, the composer paid great attention to showing the life background of the unfolding events. Colorful images of gypsies, monks, soldiers and close associates of the count, outlined in relief, memorable choirs, give the opera diversity, enliven the action. The music of "Troubadour" is rich in beautiful, free-flowing melodies close to folk melodies. It is no coincidence that many of them became widely known and beloved by the people revolutionary songs in Italy.
The story revolves around four persons: the Count di Luna, who has a secret, Leonora, the troubadour Manrico and the gypsy Azucena, who knows the secret of the Count. Leonora is loved by the Count and Manrico, she is naturally in love with Manrico. Manrico, of course, is the count's enemy, but he knows neither his nor his secret. He is the Count's kidnapped brother. But everyone will know about this at the end of the opera, although they guess from the very beginning.
When the Count learns that he has a rival, he challenges Manrico to a duel. Leonora, thinking that Manrico has been killed, is going to a monastery, but the count wants to prevent her, and Manrico wants to interfere, fights with the count, and is arrested. Leonora, in order to save him, agrees to become the wife of the count, drinks poison, comes to prison to Manrico to say that he is free, and dies in his arms, this is seen by the count, outraged, of course, by the treachery of the future wife, sends Manrico to execution, executes him and hears from the gypsy Azucena that this is his brother.

And the changing lunar disk dominating the stage seems to focus the bloody shades of opera drama.
Manrico in the brilliant performance of Marcelo Alvarez is the undisputed leader of the quartet of the main soloists. Parma's Il Trovatore is one of the best interpretations of the role of Manrico in his operatic career. Alvarez's almost flawless vocal technique is an excellent version of Verdi's style, worthy of the world's best examples. And smooth legato, and soft crescendo, and solid forte, and transparent piano generously decorate the relaxed sound of its voluminous smoky timbre with a warm golden luster. The noble, saturated stage image of Manrico fascinates thanks to the harmonious dramatic organics and relief texture of the chivalrous character of the Troubadour in the spirit of the ideal Verdian hero.
Count di Luna in the interpretation of Claudio Sgura is very good due to the thick, softly defined, richly viscous timbre with a warm note, clouded, right, light chest sound. High-quality technique provides quite a traditional sound in Verdian vocal aesthetics. And the sensually reverent, sentimental character of the count is able to touch rather than repel.
Leonora played by Teresa Romano is a classic Verdian heroine. A noble soprano with a cold silvery tint shimmering in the gloomy depths of a dramatically thick timbre. Good technique, confident sound and tessitura organics. True, uppercase ownership is devoid of stability. The gentle stage image of a romantic noble lady is quite touching.
Azucena , the work of Mzia Nioradze - evokes allusions to the sound of Cortez in a similar role. Dense, dark mezzo-soprano with cold crystal shimmers, with elastic sound in the upper register and tight lower notes. The stage sketch of azucena's character combines the imperiousness, passionate maternal love, vindictiveness, pride and insane obsession of a gypsy woman.
The sound of the choir may be devoid of monumentality and colossal scale, but the structural integrity of the mass scenes is impeccable.
Yuri Temirkanov's conducting is academically pure and transparent. The tempo and rhythmic lines of the melodic ornament are retinue with composure and respectful reverence for the score. Balanced orchestral sound pleases with unobtrusive harmony and sensitivity to the work of soloists.
A magnificent production, worthy of the great Verdi.
